The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a warning to anyone who uses Sildenafil 50mg tablet to stop taking it. It says it could lead to serious side effects, including heart problems, priapism (painful prolonged erection) and hearing loss. The MHRA says it is considering the use of Viagra Connect 50mg and sildenafil 100mg tablets in people 18 years of age and older.
A new report from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has found that people who take 50mg of sildenafil daily, but are not using it as prescribed, have a lower risk of developing a heart attack, stroke or other serious medical problems.
The new study says the MHRA is working with a special committee of doctors to make a decision about a new medication, which will be known as Sildenafil 50mg, that could be used alongside treatment for high blood pressure. The new drug is an option for patients with heart failure, irregular heartbeats, angina and other serious conditions.
It is being reviewed by the committee, and has been recommended by the MHRA, but is not yet available in the UK.
But it has been reported that two thirds of the people who took the drug had serious side effects, including a rare but serious condition called priapism, which is a painful and prolonged erection lasting four hours or more. The condition is caused by an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5).
Dr Tom O’Neill, of the MHRA, said: “This medicine could put patients at risk of the serious complications of heart failure and could raise concerns about the medication’s effectiveness and safety.”
The drug has been linked to some people who suffer from severe heart failure, which can have severe side effects and require hospitalisation. This includes people who have had a heart attack or stroke in the past six months, or have had a heart valve problem, or have had a stroke in the past six months.
Dr O’Neill said the drug was used to treat a rare type of heart valve called awhich is an artificial insemination method. In this method, an artificial sperm is placed into the uterus and sperm are injected into the womb using a tiny needle that is placed directly into the womb.
The committee has not yet decided how many people in the UK would be affected by the drug, but has decided to give it a try before deciding. It is due in the second half of the year.
A patient will be asked to take 25 tablets for every three months to see how they respond to the drug. The drug should not be taken more than once a day.
The committee has also put out a letter to doctors and pharmacists warning about the risks of the drug, saying that anyone who has taken the drug during pregnancy should be tested regularly for blood pressure and heart failure.
A spokeswoman said: “We are concerned about the increased risk of serious complications in people taking the drug.
“It is vital that patients who have previously had a heart attack or stroke within six months of their last dose of the drug and are not taking this medication should not take this medicine.
“This is a serious matter and patients should be very careful when taking this medication because of the risk of severe side effects and the possibility of having a long-term health problem.
“If a patient has already taken the medicine before they had a heart attack or stroke, they are at risk of developing a serious medical problem.”
The latest study of Sildenafil 50mg, which is available without a prescription, found that a man who took it for six months had an increased risk of a heart attack and stroke compared to people who took no drug. The drug is also being investigated by a team of scientists at the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, led by Dr Andrew McCullough, the Medical Research Ethics Service Head. The study is based in the US and is being led by Dr Stephen Witty, the research ethics committee responsible for the study.
The results of the study, which is published in the BMJ online, were not expected to appear in the journal until the publication of the results, and will be available in the journal in a couple of weeks, the MHRA said. It has asked the UK government for a response.
The MHRA, which has been investigating the drug, said it was reviewing the results and has taken “an active role” in the review.
